Get ready to for the first big storm of the year! This is the second annual Blues Harp Blowout featuring some of the finest harmonica (harp) players in Texas and the US. This year’s featured performer is the great Kellie Rucker from Los Angeles, California.
Kellie Rucker is touring in support of her new CD “Aint Hit Bottom” which features her soulful songwriting, tone-heavy harmonica and powerful singing voice. Additionally Kellie’s talent made her a key ingredient in recordings and live shows of legendary blues guitarist and Grammy nominee, Jon Butcher. Her work can also be found on discs by such diverse artists as Coco Montoya, L.A. Guns, Corey Stevens, B.B. Chung King, The Screaming Buddaheads and on various TV and radio and sessions. She stands a mere five feet tall, but don’t let her tiny stature fool you, Kellie Rucker is a very BIG talent. Over the course of a career that has spanned more than 20 years, she has toured the world and appeared on the bill with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Stephen Stills, Albert Collins, James Cotton, ZZ Top, Dan Hicks, Warren Zevon, Little Feat and B.B. King.
Steve Krase was the long time harp man for the Houston legend Jerry Lightfoot. The Blueshound from KPFT 90.1fm refers to Steve as “Houston’s Fire Breathing Dragon” on his debut 2005 CD release “Easy Livin”. Steve performs at Houston music landmark Fitzgerald’s every Wednesday.
Tommy Dardar is a blues master in every sense of the word. Once sitting at the feet of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Dardar began his musical journey 40 years ago. Since the early 1960s Dardar has been playing his brand of blues and swamp rock all over Texas, cutting his teeth on the sounds of Bobby Bland and Jimmy Reed. Tommy’s critically acclaimed CD “Fool for Love” was cut live over two days in Los Angeles, produced by Tony Braunagel and featuring most of Bonnie Raitt’s backup band.
Dave Nevling has been playing the blues in an around Houston since the 1970’s. His harp work and songwriting are featured on his three CD’s, “The Look”, “ Nightshade”, and the 2006 release “Heady Brew”. Prior to forming Dave Nevling and the Blues Kats in 1997 Dave toured and recorded with Texas legends Bert Wells and Mark May.
Brook Ballard is the crowd pleasing favorite from the ‘06 Blowout. Brook and his band “The Big Wheelers” have been working the Houston circuit for the last 5 years. Prior to that, Brook was the harp-man for Matt Leddy & The Meatcutters.
Texas Johnny Boy is a self-described “eclectic bluesician”.Texas Johnny Boy is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who also plays flute, tenor & alto sax. He is currently playing around Houston with the legendary Milton Hopkins on guitar.
Robert Taylor has lived and played music all over the world. Currently he is the dynamic harp-man and vocalist for Houston band “Funky Mustard”.
